Some plants only need extra phosphorus nutrients, potassium nutrients or nitrogen nutrients. Each nutrient provides its own supplements to the plant. Nitrogen is a building block of amino acids, the plant enzymes, its DNA and chlorophyll. Sufficient levels of nitrogen stimulate plant growth and reproduction, most prominently, growth of foliage. Phosphorus is essential for photosynthesis, transferring genetic material from one generation to the next and movement of nutrients within the cells. Lastly, Potassium regulates water, aids in the photosynthesis process, serves as an activation element for plant enzymes and is necessary for building proteins.
