Do you have what it takes to become a plant parent?
Maybe you’ve attempted to care for plants only to helplessly watch them die within a few weeks. If the thought of filling your home or office with gorgeous indoor plants exhilarates you… and leaves you feeling inadequate, we have good news!
Most plants are not that difficult to take care of, especially if you have good information and give yourself time to establish a plant care routine. Plus, interacting with indoor plants is good for your brain, so you’ll likely find it soothing.
You can be a proud plant parent even if you’re new to plant care or have struggled to keep your plants alive in the past. Here’s what you need to know.
The Basics of Indoor Plant Care
For the most part, all plants need the same resources to survive – light, water, and a nutrient-rich growing medium. If you can provide these three essential elements to your home or office plants in the right quantities, you can keep your plant alive. Here are a few tips to keep in mind as you nurture your indoor plants:
- Choose a pot with good drainage. Make sure that adorable planter you just bought for your plant has a drainage hole drilled in the bottom. If it doesn’t, drill the hole in yourself before you add potting mix and your plant to the container. If you don’t provide adequate drainage for your plants, they’re likely to drown in excess water.
- Use the right growing medium. Though tempting and probably more affordable, it’s not a good idea to scoop some dirt from outside the office and fill your planter with it. Backyard and most inground soil isn’t amended with the nutrients your plant needs to thrive. Choose a potting mix specifically made for indoor plants.
- Don’t overwater your plant. Underwatering your plant can lead to plant sickness as well, but it’s much easier to save an underwatered plant than a drowning one. Here’s the easiest way to check your soil’s moisture level: stick your finger about two inches into the potting mix. If your finger comes out moist, move on to the next one. If it’s dry, grab your watering can.
- Keep your plants as close to the sun as possible. Some plant varieties do quite well in shadier areas, but all plants benefit from sunlight. Keep your plants as close to windows as possible so that they can properly photosynthesize and survive for the long haul.
3 of the Easiest Indoor Plants to Keep Alive
If you want your houseplants to survive, you’ll have to provide them with some level of care. When it comes to nurturing the following easy care trio, you can take a deep breath when you realize you don’t remember the last time you watered them:
- Snake Plant – This independence-loving plant thrives in pots and likes to be left mostly alone. You can get away with watering this beautiful succulent once every two weeks.
- ZZ Plant – If you have limited light and a tendency to underwater your plants, the ZZ is the perfect low-maintenance plant buddy for you.
- Marble Queen Pothos – This gorgeous and resilient houseplant can tolerate low light and drought, making it the perfect addition to a busy plant parent’s collection.
As long as you keep these three easy indoor plants somewhat watered and somewhere in the proximity of light, you’ll be able to enjoy their company, stress-free.
