The full-size rubber plant in our greenhouse is available for shipping right to most NYC and NJ doorsteps. Rubber Plant Benefits
This plant is full of surprises. Besides its wonderful air freshening abilities, this rubber gem can also be used to make...well... rubber. You thought it was just a play on the looks, but rubber plants have a latex sap that can be used. Besides the Ficus elastica, other plants that produce the majority of rubber are the Hevea brasiliensis. The great thing about rubber made from the Ficus elastica is that it offers a hypoallergenic alternative to the Hevea. Medical professionals have used latex to treat trichiasis in the past as well.
Easy Going
Rubber palms are pretty fun because of how easy they are to take care of. They do just fine in most room temperatures and do fine with medium and bright light. Make sure you regularly wipe down and maintain the shine of your leaves, so that annoying mealybugs don’t decide to make your Elastica their new home.
Bundles of Green
The oval-shaped leaves are several inches long and tend to grow in clumps. When the plant is full, it looks like bundles of green with red sparks. Since the veins and edges of the leaves are outlined with bright reds and maroon hues.
A Bridge Too Far
In some countries, people use Ficus elastica roots to construct bridges. The roots are manipulated to the right shape and size until they are a complete live structure. It’s also resistant to the elements because of its superior flexibility.
